Project Lula & Me

Last week I met one of the owners of the local independent Teesside business Lula& Me ,Emma Walker 30, shared her story with Project Middlesbrough about the story behind her and sisters business Lula &Me and what Teesside’s means to her ,and why she believes Independent business is important for the Teesside area, here’s Lula & Me story.

What does Teesside mean to you?

Teesside to us is Home! It may not be the most glamorous place in the UK but we have so many lovely friends, family and memories in the area that we love it! There are some lovely villages in the Teesside area and we are also lucky enough to be close to the Beach and Sea!

What’s the story behind your business?

Lula & Me was set up in April 2019 by 3 sisters from Normanby, Middlesbrough. Emma 30, Lauren 27 and Lucy 25. After lots of discussions and research we decided to open our own online Womens Clothing and Accesssories business. We currently sell through Facebook and Instagram.

What made you start your business?

We started the business as we are all very close and passionate about working together and making a family business a success. We sell affordable, on-trend clothing and offer a local delivery service too.

Why do you think it’s important for more local people in Teesside to open their own independent business?

We think it’s important for more local people to own their own business because it helping the local industry grow. We care about and are invested in the well-being of the community and its future.

What reception have you had from local people/customers about your business since opening it?

We have had a great initial reaction from the people of Teesside! A lot of business is generated through word -of-mouth and it’s great to see local people supporting a local business. Friends and Family are also brilliant with spreading the word and increasing our customers and sales.

Why do you think Teesside in general has such a negative place to be and live by people and the media?

Teesside is perceived as a bad place to live by people and the media however we don’t agree that it’s all bad! Whilst some things we would like to change, Middlesbrough is our home and will always be. We have lots of lovely memories from the area and I am sure we will make many more. We would love to see the area grow and become great again!

Whats your message to anyone who wants to start their own business in the Teesside area?

Our message to anyone wanting to start their own business is to simply go for it! Believe in yourself and your plan. Surround yourself with good people who will support you and keep going even when things get tough! Ask for help and support when needed! Be honest and be kind. Show love and support to other local business and you will feel it back!

It so refreshing to see three young Teesside’s starting there own independent business ,something there passionate about, the Lula & Me girls are great addition to the Teesside Independent scene, there business is one for anyone to look out for in the future.
